What does it cost to build bike lanes?

November 16, 2011

It seems I have been inspired by quotes of late.  Today’s quote came from Eric Doherty – I saw him speak regarding the amazing Transportation Transformation document.

We were talking about the Gateway project, and Eric was talking about the numbers.  He was talking about the billions of dollars spent on the gateway project when he spouted this great quote.  Now my memory is a little fuzzy on exactly what Eric said, but it was something along the lines of ‘just imagine how much red paint we could buy for the billions we spent on Gateway’.Now you are probably saying to yourself – ‘red paint, what does that have to do with anything’?  Enter Wikilanes – and this group of citizens who built their own bike lanes.  Eric was talking about building bike lanes, and not highways. In Eric’s mind (and probably the minds of the folks involved with the Wikilanes project), if we spent our money on paint, painted bike lanes on the roads, and got people out of their cars (not onto bigger, wider highways) we would all be much better off… I can’t disagree.

Imagine all the money we could have saved.  Imagine all the great things we could have done with that money, never mind the environmental impact of keeping all of the cars of the road, of not having to build all these roads.  Shame really.

Great post. We could have built a light rail connection with improved bus service to connect people to the light rail stations to get more people out of their cars. The traffic congestion problem would have been greatly alleviated if not solved. We could have been at the building stage of multiple light rail lines in the region instead of just dreaming about them.

Harmel, Thanks so much for the reply. I can’t agree with you more. We also need to plan – really plan for active transportation (cycling and walking) from our communities to transit hubs. In my perfect world you could walk or ride to an express bus to a skytrain or LRT and then to work…
